Paris Blues.

Por casualidade vi este filme, de 1961, no dia em que Barack Obama tomou posse como 44º presidente dos E.U.A. Eddie Cook é um músico afro-americano, “refugiado” em Paris. Se na América se vê forçado a estar no meio de uma luta racial que não lhe interessa, em Paris sente que a sua cor não é relevante e sente-se bem. A questão da luta pelos direitos civis só se lhe volta a apresentar depois de conhecer e se apaixonar por Connie Lampson, uma jovem professora americana bastante comprometida com a causa, de visita a Paris por duas semanas. O amor surge. O assunto é evitado mas depois de fazer ver a Eddie que não há a mais pequena possibilidade de ficar em Paris, Connie tenta fazê-lo regressar, a “casa”, às “raízes”, à pátria, ao “seu mundo”. Mas duas semanas passam muito depressa. Paris continuará a ser Paris, a América continuará a ser América e os negros continuarão a ser negros durante muito tempo. Talvez mesmo depois de 2009. Talvez mesmo depois de Obama. E o amor? Talvez duas semanas. Talvez mais. O filme não diz e eu não me atrevo a adivinhar.

And I don’t have to prove anything else. - Like what? - Like… because I’m negro I’m different. Because I’m negro I’m not different. I’m different, I’m not different… who cares? Look, I don’t have to prove either case. Can you understand that? - There isn’t a place on the face of the earth that isn’t hell for somebody, some race, some color, some sex. - For me Paris is just fine. - Eddie you’re wrong! You’re wrong! And I’m not denying what you feel, because it wouldn’t be there if there wasn’t a very good reason. But things are much better than they were five tears ago and they’re gonna still be better next year. And not because negros come to Paris but because negros stay home, and with millions of white people they work to make things better for everybody, everywhere in America. - Look… are we gonna stand here discussing this? - I have some shopping I’ll better do.
